Times Are Changing

“As I write this we are in the throes of a global pandemic; Covid-19. The world as we know it has changed; borders are closed, planes are grounded, countless Tourism Professionals have lost their income and the travel plans of millions of people have been affected.” says Wedding Travel Specialist Anita Gatley.

As a Wedding Travel Specialist Broker, I have seen this first-hand. We were the first to see the effects of the Corona-virus back in January with the announcements from China coming thick and fast.

The challenge as a travel professional is to manage the countless pieces of information coming from all the airlines, suppliers, insurance companies as well as the information circulated from our own Governments as well as those overseas.

Daily, countless suppliers release a policy today only to amend it tomorrow! There has been much said in the media about travel agents profiteering from this situation and I can hand on heart say that this is not the case. We don’t make the rules but we have to enforce them otherwise we risk huge bills if we don’t abide by the supplier policies and trust me they are all different. A refund would generally take 3 months but in this unprecedented time they are taking many more months than this due to huge demand.

Whilst many couples have had to cancel their weddings many have been able to postpone and will eventually have their special day. I am proud to say all my suppliers have offered to rebook for 2021 at no extra charge to the couples.

On a brighter note, there are positive mumbles about a Trans-Tasman/South Pacific travel bubble which would enable us to travel closer to home at least in the short term. I have contacts in both Australia and all areas of the South Pacific who can help with your destination wedding, elopement, honeymoon or romantic escape.

After all this is over there will be plenty of people who’ve had those “Covid-dreams” of sitting on a white sandy beach, or sipping a cocktail at a swim-up bar wanting to make them a reality and I can help with that as soon as the borders are open!
