My Mother and I opened up Blackbird Eatery in 2015, in little old Nelson, Nz. Coming fresh out of a two year study of Professional Cookery at the local NMIT and only a short stint working in a kitchen at the café. I really had no idea what I was in for starting up a new business. Many hours, mentally and physically, we are now in our second year, and I couldn’t be more proud.
I have been baking cakes for friends and family for as long as I can remember, and I was doing them so often I thought why not put a name to it and get my cakes out there more! So, with the Eatery being named Blackbird, I decided to basically create ‘Blackbird Cakery’ as Blackbird Eatery’s little sidekick.
Blackbird Cakery has been running for a year now, and I couldn’t complain. Baking and creating cakes has always been a passion of mine, and I love to hear others enjoy them as well. I love making different flavour combinations and decoration ideas. On my days or nights off, you’ll find me in the kitchen, baking mini cakes and trying new flavour combos. My decorative style is definitely the rustic, boutique look. The semi naked icing, caramel drizzles, the foliage and flowers are my signature. Baking cakes is a daily habit of mine, I’m also always making my own sauces and growing my own flowers, but when my garden isn’t looking to good, I head to my local flower farm for supplies.
I live for what I do, baking, creating and styling. I can’t wait to see what the future brings for Blackbird Cakery.
