Matt and I met in May 2012 while we were on our OE living in London.  He was the boy next door – well dossing next door. Truth be told I don’t actually recall meeting Matt the first time. Our second meeting included a friendly bet on the State of Origin (which I won) and a couple of cold ciders in the backyard.

Matt had surprised me with a weekend away in Marlborough to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. After a rough ferry crossing we drove to the beautiful Karaka Point where he popped the question and of course I said 'YES'!! He then surprised me with a beautiful lunch at Wither Hills Winery and then a night at Vintners hotel. It was truly the most perfect weekend.

We chose to have an early Autumn wedding at Martins Bay as that is the time of year we love spending there the most – not too hot or busy, just right. The only consideration we had to make was what plan B would look like if the weather turned. Thankfully we had a perfectly calm day and plan B was not needed. Martins Bay has been the holiday spot for my family for a long time (since my mum was a little girl). I have had so many happy memories there. On our return from the UK, Martins Bay was one of the first places Matt and I visited and this was when Matt discovered the beauty of it. Since then we have spent long weekends and summer holidays there. Matt even asked my Dad for permission to marry me while fishing not far from the bay.

The easiest way to get around Martins Bay is by tractor so it was fitting that myself, and the rest of the bridal party, traveled down to the beach by tractor. My dad had the honour of driving with the rest of the bridal party on the trailer behind. The look on Dad's face as he was driving us all down was truly special, he looked so proud.

We didn’t have any particular theme, our focus was on our family, friends and great food. We had my beautiful Ruth from Scintilla – Event Décor create our bouquets, buttonholes, flower crowns and Matt’s nan's corsage. I really wanted a large unstructured style bouquet with lots of greens and pops of burgundy to tie in with the bridesmaids dresses. I don’t really know much about flowers so we decided to let Ruth do what she does best and create the beautiful florals. She used chrysanthemums, celosia and amathus, we also wanted a lot of foliage to help tie in the rustic-ness of the beach surrounds.

I am a caterer/chef and Matt is a bit of a foodie, so finding the perfect catering was really important to both of us. We really wanted to go with a caterer that was local to the area and someone that would showcase the local fresh produce. Mark, from iCater, created a spectacular grazing table for everyone to enjoy just after the ceremony and we went with family style dining during the reception. My personal favorite dish was the Seared Whole Beef fillet with béarnaise sauce.

I’m a bit of a caker and I always knew I wanted more than one cake and three seemed about right. Cake number one was a two-tiered cake – my chocolate cake recipe and my mum’s fruit cake which had a brandy butter cream icing. Cake number two was a carrot cake with a traditional cream cheese icing and cake number three was a gluten and dairy-free lemon cake with dairy-free butter cream. As I wasn’t able to make all the cakes myself, I entrusted my mum's bestie to turn my cake vision into reality – and they were epic!

I always wanted to wear a skirt and top and as soon as I tried on my Sottero and Midgley gown from Astra Bridal on I knew it was the one. The skirt was an ivory coloured tulle with a very small train.  The bodice had an off-the-shoulder look and was ivory lace with pearl and diamond beading. I wore a long ivory veil and a simple pearl and diamond hair piece. My earrings were a drop style that complemented my dress beautifully. I also wore a stunning Swarovski crystal tennis bracelet which Matt had arranged for my sister to give me as I was getting ready on the day. My shoes were a simple nude peep-toe wedge, they were also my something old which I had purchased as bridesmaids shoes from Novo shoes for my sister’s wedding a few years earlier. I also carried with me a handkerchief that my grandma had given my mum on her wedding day.

I had 3 bridesmaids and two flower girls. My bridesmaids were Megan, my best friend from Australia, and my two sisters, Julia and Alexandra. Alexandra was also our amazing MC. I purchased their dresses from ASOS, they were a summery full length dress with an open back and maroon in colour. As gifts I gave them each a personalised black clutch from The Daily Edited and gold earrings from Ruby.

Matt and his groomsmen wore suits by Scriber and Marks. Matt was the only one to wear a tie. We purchased this form Vance Vivian in Wellington, it was a plain black Armani one which matched the suit well and also made him stand out from the others. As groomsmen gifts Matt had organised personalised cuff links that best suited each of the boys along with some funky socks and a small bottle of their favourite liquor. Matt loves watches so, I surprised him on the day with a new black MVMT watch to wear which I had engraved with our wedding date. I had organised for his best man to give it to him as they were getting ready.

We decided to go with a few Spotify playlists. Reason being, Matt and I have a very wide range of tastes when it comes to music.  The first playlist was designed to capture the seaside/beach feeling so there was a lot of chilled out, beach vibes type music. We then created one that played while we were eating dinner and then our party list had a few songs that we picked that guaranteed young and old would be able to dance.  As the night got on and a few more drinks were had, the requests started coming hard and fast and Spotify allowed us to accompany all of them!

The speeches were all great – so many laughs, tears, kind words and fond memories were shared. My most memorable part though was my husband’s speech and the moment he addressed me, to the whole room, as his wife for the very first time. Nothing could wipe the smile from my face at that moment.

There are two things that I would recommend to anyone getting married. Firstly try not to worry/stress about things that are out of your control, as we had a destination wedding of sorts, I decided before we got there that I wouldn’t worry about the small things that weren’t 100% perfect. This was the best thing I could have done as it meant I really got to enjoy the buildup and all the excitement that went with it.

The second thing we would recommend is to put 100% of your trust into your photographer. If something seems a bit weird or out of the norm when they suggest a photo, just trust them.  They really do know what is going to look amazing! We did and the photos were beyond what we had hoped for!
