Sheenae & Michael

Michael and I first met seven years ago when I was at work and he came in with a group of friends. We had mutual friends, but it felt like he was so much older than me that he would never know who I was! On New Years Eve in 2016, during a trip to Europe, Michael proposed to me in Montmarte (my absolute favourite place in the world), with the perfect view of the Eiffel Tower.

We had our wedding in summer at Pah Homestead in Auckland. I have always wanted to get married in a garden so it was perfect! Additionally, Michael’s family was over for Christmas from England so it made sense to hold it while they were all here.

Myself and my bridesmaids did our bouquets. My maid of honour, Jade, did an amazing job with them. Amy and I went to the flower market at 5.30am to pick them out. It was such a mission – but they looked incredible on the day. Proteas are my favourite flowers so I knew I wanted them, and I wanted lots of greenery. We had a lot of fun making them, so that was the most important thing.

Our theme was very eclectic. It was just mine and Michael’s personal tastes with elements that we both loved and wanted to incorporate. We weren't too bothered about following a particular style.

A lot of the elements on our day were handmade. Our archway was drilled together by Michael after finding all the branches in parks. He made all the games we had; noughts and crosses, the ring toss and bean-bag toss. Michael is very handy so it was amazing to have so many things that he had made on the day. Our amazing photographers are also close friends of ours along with our celebrant, so it the whole day all the more special.

The reception was a sit-down dinner on two long tables, but we chose the table share option so the waiters put different plates of food in the middle of the tables which was such a great option because guests could just take what they wanted. People raved about the pork belly and the roast pumpkin salad. Additionally, at each person place setting, we had a polaroid picture of either Michael or myself with them with their name on it. Everyone loved it!

We had a chocolate cake made by Michael’s mum. I meant it when I said a lot of things were handmade. She designed it and decorated the two-tiered cake with peonies and little Lego people as the cake toppers.

I really wasn’t picky at all with my dress. The first one I saw in the shop was this one and it was the first one I tried on. I loved it from the beginning. My dress was from Alma J Bridal designed by Alma Wong. I was trying to go for a classic look, wavy Gatsby hair and vintage earrings. The dress had a sweetheart neck and floral detailing everywhere with a super long train, which I loved.

If I could give an advice to the future brides I would just say: HAVE FUN. This is yours and your husbands day and for one day it’s just about you guys!
