Shailan and I met for the first time in January 2016. We were set up on a double date via Shailan’s best friend and his now ex-girlfriend who is a friend of mine.

Shailan and I got engaged on Boxing Day in 2016. We were in London for Christmas visiting his family and for me, meeting them for the first time other than on FaceTime. We were in a London phone box at the Tower of London. I thought I was just going out for a nice dinner in London. My friends had said to me 'do you think he will?' I was like, 'no no it hasn’t been one year yet!' (We had spoken about being together one year before getting engaged).

We got married in The Officers Mess in Devonport, Auckland, holding both the ceremony and reception there on Friday 6th April 2018. Autumn in Auckland is such a beautiful climate and the weather is generally very settled. We had Shailan’s family coming from India and the UK so we wanted to show off Auckland. Additionally, we wanted to find a venue that we both fell in love with and that didn’t scream 'wedding venue'.

We wanted something simple but elegant. For our colour palette, we had white and gold with bits of greenery for the reception and then navy and burgundy for the bridesmaids and groomsmen. We loved that fact we could have the whole day there and we didn’t need to decorate the venue much to create what we wanted.

As wedding favours we got little Indian trinket boxes (in all different colours) brought over from India, inside we had a gold heart chocolate with a stick on Bindi. We had these at all the female's seats and just the chocolate for the males. It was so much fun as we all placed our Bindis on our forehead for the reception. It was a great way to incorporate a little Indian culture into our day.

Our stunning florals were done by the talented Margaret Dorrington. Marg created a white and green arrangement for myself – I wanted a medium size bouquet with a slight rustic feel. Again incorporating my white and green theme. I had my Nana’s brooch attached to my bouquet. For my bridesmaids, Marg helped me come up with the colour concept that would best suit both my dress and the girls' dresses. We wanted to have my bouquet different (just white and green) to the bridesmaids. They all looked absolutely incredible. The bridesmaids' bouquets had that pop of colour that looked stunning against the burgundy.

Two days prior to our wedding we held a small Mehndi celebration with our guests who were already in Auckland. We had Rachael from Precious beauty in Mt Roskill do Henna for everyone. We celebrated with bubbles and nibbles for the afternoon and Shailan’s mum Varsha perform a blessing to celebrate the start of the wedding festivities. Guests wore traditional Indian attire. Shailan ’s parents helped us create a special Hindu ceremony to incorporate into the ceremony on our day. Shailan’s brother Shalin lead this part of our ceremony. We choose to do three Hindu blessings Jaimala, Mangalphera and the Mangalsutra.

I really wanted a gown that was fitted through the body to show off my curves but that had a low back. I visited one bridal shop in Christchurch with my mum but liked a combination of a few so myself and a friend of mine Sarah Horton created a dress based on a mix of the gowns I had seen and tried. She created a sketch of my ideas, she knew exactly what I was trying to recreate. She has such an eye for detail and is super particular about the work she’s creating. A true artist.

I was super lucky that Shailan has impeccable organisation and budgeting skills. We had a spreadsheet for everything. Anytime we bought something for the wedding big or small we accounted for it. In the end, our initial wedding budget covered all four days of events not just our wedding. I also had lots of time to plan and do research. My advice would be: don’t just go with your first offer on something – do the research and you’ll always find it cheaper.
