A Beautiful Chaos, the new collection from Elizabeth May, embodies the truth and inner power of designer Julia’s passion for pushing the limits within bridal wear. Brave pops of colour, bold and textured laces and detailing have been inspired by Julia’s travels through India and Nepal, bringing depth and meaning to each collection piece.
The beauty and the chaos of India and Nepal, the landscapes and culture of the country, the hard working labour of the people have inspired the layers of different fabrics, tones and textures, the handsewn detailing of bodices and the mindful practice of creating from the heart.
We talked to Julia as she prepares her collection for the catwalk, to find out more about what inspires her when creating bridal gowns.
Why are you excited to show your collection to brides and grooms of the 2018-19 season?
A Beautiful Chaos is a bold and brave collection for the brides who are looking for something a little alternative to the traditional white wedding gown.
Can you tell us about some key pieces and detailing that we’ll see on the runway?
Stepping outside of traditional gowns, A Beautiful Chaos includes a lace jumpsuit, bodices paired with skirt or trouser separates, handcrafted ethnic jewellery and leather detailing, and plenty of colour – both subtle and bold. The textures of sequins and lace, tulles and satins, tailored trousers, full skirts and large trains create a visual and sensory feast.
What do you hope brides take away from the show, this year?
That they can wear whatever they want to on their wedding day. It is paramount that each and every Elizabeth May bride feels supported, empowered, confident and totally badass on her wedding day, wearing a consciously designed and crafted piece that is an expression of her personality, wants, needs and desires.
When you’re not working, where would we find you and what would you be doing ?
I am incredibly blessed to live on the Hibiscus Coast where I spend a lot of time at the beach with my husband and two kids on sunny days. I am also currently training to be a yoga teacher, which is an incredibly confronting yet empowering journey, and a passion I intend to pursue once my training is complete.
