Set down an unassuming lane in the heart of Auckland's vibrant city you'll find the Bluestone Room, Auckland's oldest commercial building with a fascinating history and incredible architectual character, perfect for a unique wedding. We chat to the friendly and talented team about why their venue is the ultimate place to tie the knot.
Tell us about the history of The Bluestone Room. What makes it a unique, one-of-a-kind venue?
The Bluestone Room history dates back to 1861. Originally people came here to collect fresh drinking water from our well – a tradition that has continued in her current incarnation as a lively bar.
It’s had many faces, once as an auctioneer’s house, a confectionery company, various nightclubs, it operated ‘unlicensed’ in the '60s, was the stomping ground for rock 'n roll and live music enthusiasts and in the '70s, punk rockers came to revel and misbehave. The notorious Keith Richards even came for a jam downstairs after one of their Rolling Stones tours in 1976!
This site eventually fell on hard times and barely escaped demolition in the late '80s, saved only by the efforts of our then Conservation Minister Helen Clark, soon after becoming recognised as Auckland’s oldest commercial building. The Bluestone Room as we know it today was resurrected from bare bones and bought back to life in the '00s when our Director fell in love with her. We have been hosting guests' own declarations of love upstairs in this special venue while trading as a bustling gastro pub downstairs ever since.
Why does it make the ultimate venue for a wedding?
We believe that the stories that lie within these walls, the character of the building, the contrast between the rough and the luxurious is enough in itself to become connected to this venue. The rugged exterior that greets you at the entrance together with kauri beams and wooden floors that carry with them the signs of years well spent, fabulous chandeliers and a high chapel-like roof make for an unfussy backdrop for your ceremony and is a remarkably fitting setting for such an important milestone in your lives.
As a business that has itself been operating for over 10 years under the same ownership, we recognise the effort it takes to build relationships and the importance of celebrating family ties- another reason why we love being a part of the traditions and history that comes with every wedding we host. We are perfectly placed in the central city, surrounded by accommodation properties and abundant parking, making it a practical and easy option for couples and their loved ones. When visiting us on Durham Lane, you will see straight away; from the private entrance, full audio/visual system and dedicated facilities; the benefits of letting us host your special day.
What style of wedding would it suit?
Your choice of venue, its ambience and the way you style it, essentially becomes the third part in the narrative of your wedding day story. The great advantage of our venue is its versatility; our venue is timeless, unique and regal – serving everything from the most extravagant affairs to the more intimate. We cater to a variety of events in addition to weddings (we've seen it all!) so if you have an idea, we have a lot of experience to share that you can use to your benefit.
Right now, era themed weddings are proving popular with a touch of the avant garde, while clean and contemporary, vintage and classic concepts with a masculine touch are also popular choices! We are committed to creating the right event for you and while we have certain strengths to play to, we are prepared to go on a journey to achieve exactly what your heart desires.
Can you tell us about your wedding packages?
Our wedding packages are bespoke and affordable, we know what works and always ensure we establish what our couples have in mind and do our best to achieve this. We have an in-house styling team and work with trusted and reputable suppliers that allow us to pull every facet of your big day together.
What are some of the different menu options?
The Bluestone Room is famous for its hearty classic meals and we love to bring what we do best into our offerings for our weddings and events and make them sing. We also customise a lot of our menus to be more in line with the overall theme – this can include lavish handcrafted dessert canapes, our plentiful family style feasts served to the tables, grazing tables, or your more traditional three course plated options served alternatively to your guests. Chef’s Berebere Chicken, Apple and Fennel Braised Pork Belly are amongst the favourites.
How far in advance would you recommend couples book the Bluestone Room?
Six months at a minimum is preferable to secure your chosen date, but we can respond earlier (subject to availability) for those couples whose love simply can't wait! We have been known to work miracles at very short notice, so do not count us out!
Anything else you’d like to add?
With the venue being such a big open space we can host the ceremony onsite as well – it’s a logistical saviour for couples who want to spend the maximum amount of time with their guests and not have to worry about arranging transport. We can separate the space and create smaller nooks for mingling before proceeding onto the reception. If wet weather prevents you from proceeding with the ceremony at your primary site, we have contingency plans available to accommodate you without missing a beat. We are a sought after venue that is perfectly suited to winter and autumnal theming while being an ideal summer retreat to protect you from the fierce sun on what can be end up being a very long day. Do everything you can to take the stress out of your day and make space to enjoy yourselves by letting The Bluestone Room staff take care of you.
