After seven years together, Edward and I got engaged while on a glamping weekend in West Auckland. I was leading the way to the top of a sand dune to watch a famous Bethells Beach sunset and when I turned around, Edward was down on one knee. Having organised the getaway myself, a proposal was the last thing I expected!

Continuing the theme of the proposal, we arranged our wedding around the concept of a West Auckland glamping weekend at Jonkers Farm, with its acres of natural bush and green fields. Tents and a marquee from Wildernest gave guests the option of staying for the long weekend and Andre from The Edison Project lit the site beautifully; it looked magical at night. Glamping tents housed 60 guests over the three-day weekend.

Ahead of the big day, we asked each guest to send us a photo of them as a child. We used these instead of place names, and wrote a message on the back letting the guest know how they had influenced our lives. Edward and I are known coffee-lovers, so bags of coffee beans made fitting favours.

We didn’t follow a colour theme, instead letting the farm’s rustic feel inspire a lush, earthy look. A few days ahead of the wedding we held a working bee where family and friends helped us gather foliage, arrange centrepieces for reception tables and create a trail of greenery that hung above the bridal table. Florists Leaf and Honey took care of the bridal bouquets.

A wedding cake made by my brother accompanied dessert, along with a five-tier cheese ‘cake’ decorated with apricots and greenery.

John Zimmermann designed and stitched my long-sleeved lace gown. Its figure-hugging illusion bodice gave way to an A-line tulle skirt, while a fingertip-length veil made of the same fabric completed my bridal look.
