An uber romantic twist on everything vibrant and vintage, Bella Inkersell and Christopher Bailey married at Phar Lap Raceway, Timaru, on Saturday, November 10, 2012.
Our love story
Chris and I met at a friend’s leaving party five years ago. His proposal was perfect, and suited us to a tee – he asked me to marry him on the morning of my 23rd birthday, just as we were both waking up. Afterwards he went to work, and I jumped straight on the phone to let all my friends and family know – it was the best birthday ever.
Setting the scene
Phar Lap Raceway’s well-manicured greenery and rural outlook formed a picturesque backdrop for our outdoor ceremony. The indoor function room was a blank canvas, setting the stage for our vintage-inspired styling and a pink colour palette. We decorated the walls and ceiling with pink, black and white Chinese lanterns and matching bunting, while each table featured vintage tea cups bursting with soft pink and white peonies, gypsophila, carnations and roses.
A sumptuous feast
Our 130 guests enjoyed a buffet which featured crayfish, salmon, baked ham, battered fish, new potatoes and fresh salads. Finger food sweets, such as chocolate-dipped strawberries, éclairs and mini tarts, accompanied our cake for dessert. The three-tiered creation, made by my cousin and grandma, featured layers of dark chocolate, carrot cake and mud chocolate, with its ombre icing transitioning from dark to light pink and a trail of blousy peonies embellishing the side.
For our guests
As favours, guests helped themselves to our lolly table, which featured a range of our favourite sweets including pink jellybeans and red liquorice. We custom-made paper bags stamped with ‘Bella and Chris, Love is Sweet’ so guests could take the lollies home. A photo booth kept guests entertained throughout the evening, with its instant photo strips acting as take-home keepsakes.
My dream dress
My dress, which I found online, was made of white chiffon. Its thick straps joined together to form a one-shoulder design at the back, and my aunty added a silver, beaded belt to match my headband. I wore my hair in a softly curled side ponytail, and finished my look with a pair of silver flat shoes from Astra Bridal.
As a special touch for our ceremony, we included our dog Pip. My dad and I picked her up on the way, then my niece and nephew walked her up the aisle.
My advice for brides to be
Your big day only happens once and goes by so fast, so don’t waste time worrying about minor details or about what other people think. As long as you’re happy and it’s everything you want, that’s all that matters.
