How did you become a Celebrant?
I became a Celebrant by accident! I was working as a senior youth worker for a large organisation. Because of my role and connection with people and groups, when someone in the extended community had an event they asked me to officiate - naming babies, opening new offices, leading funerals etc. One day I heard someone talking in the office about their wedding, and someone else said, "Ask Kim, she's our community celebrant!" I hadn't thought of myself that way, for me it was just an extension of my work, walking alongside people in their life journeys. However I got myself registered so I could say yes, to whatever people wanted me to do for them. At that point I was the youngest Celebrant to be registered in New Zealand.
What types of ceremonies have you done?
I've officiated at thousands of wedding and civil union ceremonies all over my beautiful country, from Cape Reinga to Te Anau. I've performed enormous ceremonies and tiny ones, zombie ceremonies, sunrise ceremonies and midnight ones, walked with the wedding guests through the bush to waterfalls, arrived by helicopter, boat, tractor, motorbike and horse. I've had the good fortune to visit some of the most stunning spots in Aotearoa; tiny islands, beloved bays, urban roof gardens and exquisite estates. I've married people under the apple tree in their backyard, in rest homes, art galleries, vineyards, chapels, marae, in boats and on mountaintops at dawn. On the first day of marriage equality in New Zealand, on a plane at 30,000 feet, I married Lynley and Ally, who won the Air New Zealand "Love is in the Air" competition. I've married people who are sports stars, television stars, famous musicians, unemployed, students and pensioners. My concern is not with what you earn but how you feel, not with who you love but in celebrating your love.
