Simon and I met seven years ago at a bar in Onehunga where he was playing a gig. I was taken by his amazing voice and guitar playing. He knew he had won me over when he sung Bruno Mars ‘Just the way you are’ to me while we slow danced in the courtyard of the bar after closing time. Simon knew I wanted an intimate proposal. He proposed to me at home. He put the ring box on top of my phone in the bedroom and told me I had a call. I went to retrieve my phone, found the ring box and when I turned around he was on one knee. I said 'YES' of course and once we had composed ourselves from elation and tears he took me out to dinner at our favourite restaurant.
We decided that we wanted a small and intimate wedding with family and just a few close friends who mainly made up the bridal party. We were married in August 2017 at the Warwick Le Lagon Resort in Vanuatu. We were so incredibly blessed that our friends and family made the journey to celebrate our wedding. I first traveled to Vanuatu with Mum in 2015. I fell in love with the stunning scenery, the unpretentiousness of the surroundings and the infectious laughter of the people that rung throughout the streets. I really wanted Simon, our friends and family to experience this for themselves and to bring them to a place that many of them had not visited before.
Our wedding co-ordinators were such an incredible support and were always willing to go above and beyond which makes organising a wedding from another country that much less daunting. The most moving thing they did for us was to organise a boat to take us out to the lagoon to give Dad a Vanuatu farewell when they heard he had passed away from a terminal illness in New Zealand while we were away for our wedding. The amazing people at the Warwick will give you an experience you will never forget and make you feel like family.
I found my dream dress at Bridal Brilliance - the first bridal boutique I went to. I had a vague idea of what my dream dress should look like. Belinda and her amazing team really looked after me and helped to pick out styles for me to try that suited my body shape and skin tone. I finally fell in love with a high neck sheath silhouette wedding dress by Australian designer, Stella York. The ivory dress is made of lace, crepe and subtle beading that creates a silhouette that elongates and flatters my curvy shape. The high lace and bead neckline sits just on the collarbone and flows down the bodice and over the hips. I also chose this dress as it has a zip back and fabric-covered buttons making it easy to get in to. The buttons continue down a long sweeping 2 metre crepe train but are merely for show.
Simon and his groomsmen did a great job of choosing their attire from Hallensteins. Simon wore a light weight black cotton shirt, charcoal grey tie and waistcoat to contrast the white shirts and black ties worn by the groomsmen.
As Simon is a musician and as are many of his friends the choice of entertainment was an easy one. We were very blessed to have David Shanhun looking after the music from the Ceremony through to Reception. Simon felt comfortable with David as our MC, Videographer and Entertainment as they have performed and recorded music together for the last 7 years. David is a full-time musician based in Auckland. He is an accomplished guitarist, singer and is in high demand for events, gigs and weddings. For our procession song we chose a cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” performed by Travis Atreo & Matt Boyd. For the reception, we gave David free rein as to the songs he thought fitting for our relaxed style. We were also surprised with a local band that the Resort had kindly asked to entertain our guests while Simon and I had our Bride & Groom photos taken.
Our Wedding day will always be the most incredible and special day of our lives that I wish I could put on repeat and live it over and over. Everything went perfectly. We could not have asked for a better day. Simon and I both agree that the one moment that stands out for us…The moment when I saw him waiting for me on the Wedding Deck and for him, me walking towards him. That first moment when you see each other is so powerful and moving. There was a mix of nerves and excitement seeing each other, like it was the first time all over again and knowing from this moment forward you are truly together forever.
