Sarah & Neth

Sarah Kong and Neth Ky brought a slice of European romance to New Zealand with their stylish Italian-inspired wedding.

Neth and I met through mutual friends eight years ago, and it came as a wonderful surprise when he proposed. The 'question' moment was quite out of the ordinary, because it was nationally televised on The Block NZ: Villa Wars – a TV show I was competing on at the time.

The Milk Station in Otaki capture my heart immediately with its abundant orchard and airy Italian-inspired dining hall. Features such as the chandelier and rising pillars meant I didn't have to stress about elaborate decor, as the space already suited our minimalistic Tuscan theme. With many guests travelling from overseas, summer was an ideal time to showcase New Zealand in all its natural beauty.

I envisioned lots of foliage on the tables, which my friend Neary from Little Nik Nax arranged, also creating adorable potted succulents, which guests took home as favours. 

Dove grey and blue hues made up our colour palette, and Bloom Supply fashioned whimsical, softly coloured bouquets to complement the already texture-rich aesthetics of the venue.

Designed by Sally Eagle, my gown was bias cut, creating the illusion that it was a single piece of fabric. Its slightly stretch meant there was no zip, making it unbelievably comfortable to wear. Neth and his groomsmen wore slim, light grey suits ASOS, which coincidentally matched my bridesmaids' floaty, silver chiffon dresses. Neth's hidden talent is sewing, so he created the men's bow ties and pocket squares himself.

I designed all the wedding stationery. The menus were printed on translucent drafting film, and I loved the final look. 

Our red velvet cake (Neth's favourite flavour) was created by Gina from Monnounours Macarons, featuring three tiers, thick cream cheese icing, and decorative cascades of pink and white blooms.

Before the ceremony, Neth and I had a 'first look' shoot, which was one of the major highlights of the day. Having that quiet, private time together was so special, and gave us more quality time after the ceremony to enjoy all the festivities with our guests.

Something I learned: It's easy to spend ridiculous amounts of money on decor that isn't reusable. Take time to refine your styling choices. Less can definitely be more.
