Hayden and I met September 20, 2013. We were next door neighbours. I had a fire at my house and Hayden happened to be home at the time. He helped my dad and my flatmate get over the fence to escape the house. When I arrived I asked if he had a spare room for me to stay in. He said yes and I stayed that night…and I never left! Of course Hayden’s version of events is that he asked me to stay.
We went to Mexico for a long holiday in November 2015. Hayden proposed while we were walking along the beach. I was in shock, I couldn't believe it. He got down on one knee and said ‘baby will you marry me’? I asked him if he was serious and if he was sure! I then said yes. We kept it to ourselves for the next 24 hours. It was so nice to have our little secret.
We were married 10 months later at Lookout Lodge Wanaka surrounded by 77 of our closest friends and family.
We chose to get married in Wanaka as I am from New Zealand. It was easy to convince Hayden, as he loves it here too. We had been there together a year previous for my 30th. We chose Wanaka over Queenstown as it's so easy to get around, and of course the views are stunning. We chose the Lookout Lodge as we wanted somewhere we could have both our ceremony and reception in the same space. We loved the view as did our guests.
I wanted a modern but classic dress. I found my Suzanne Harward dress online and when I tried it on, I knew it was the one. It’s a fit and flare dress with a boat neck, cowl back and an embossed fabric. My veil was beautiful with lace edging. It was my favourite part of my outfit.
My most memorable moment of the day was walking down the aisle while my brother sang "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley. It was a surprise and my dad was so overwhelmed when I told him it was Craig singing. He also sang our first dance song. For the rest of the music we chose the Queenstown-based band Calico, they were fantastic and the guests raved about them!
Andrea Crawford from Queenstown fashioned our flowers. I wanted the arrangements to be a bit wild looking. I wanted green, white and plum. We also had a gorgeous archway that we got married under.
We had a couple of sentimental things throughout the wedding. Behind us at the reception we had pictures of loved family members who are no longer with us surrounded by flowers. We also used my mum's family furs to keep us warm whilst taking our photos.
The boys all wore navy to fit in with the classic modern look. We hired them from Brisbane as that is where they were all from.Hayden bought a suit from Hugo Boss. He got a tie, white shirt and white pocket square from David Jones.
Remember to take some moments during the day to soak it all in. Everyone says it goes fast, and boy it does. Make sure you have some private moments with your new wife/husband! It is such a busy day so it is good to steal some moments together
