Chris and I met when I had just returned after four years in London. We met through mutual friends and began dating not long after.
The proposal happened when we were away in Raglan for the weekend. Chris had been acting a little strange and distracted during the day, and by the time he took me out for dinner he could hardly hold a conversation! We were at a beautiful restaurant looking out to the sea and as the evening got cooler the waitress moved our table inside the restaurant. Chris asked the waitress to take a photo of us and as she did he got down on one knee, of course I said yes! The whole restaurant had been watching and started clapping and cheering, it felt like I was in a movie!
Around two months before the wedding we were told my Mum didn’t have long to live, so we decided to have the wedding as soon as possible to make sure she would be well enough to enjoy the big day. This meant a short eight week engagement to organise a wedding! We are so lucky to have such supportive friends and family that helped us get it arranged in time.
I wore my mum’s wedding dress so it was extra special. She kept it for 33 years just in case. The dress had a lacey light blue bodice with long white lacey sleeves and a sheer skirt – a true princess style wedding dress!
I wanted statement earrings and fell in love with the gorgeous Christie Nicolaides gold and turquoise Paloma earrings. They are handcrafted with natural turquoise stones, and every pair is unique. Chris’ mum lent me her gorgeous gold bangle as my “something borrowed", it was so meaningful to have something from her to wear on my special day.
The groomsmen wore navy suits from Hallensteins with waistcoats and brown shoes and Chris also wore a blazer.
We got married on the 29th April 2017 at Kumeu Valley Estate surrounded by 100 of our closest friends and family. Chris suggested the venue and it was actually the first one we visited, but as we came up the driveway to see it for the first time, I teared up and knew it was the one!
We went with a rustic theme to tie in with the look of the venue.
My friend Richelle has her own floristry business called Chelle and Co so she did our flowers – we absolutely loved them! I sent through some photos of different ideas and she managed to tie them all together whilst incorporating her own personal style, they came out absolutely beautiful, she did a wonderful job!
A friend’s mum, Nadine Taylor created our cake and she did a fantastic job! It was three tiered, with chocolate, vanilla and butterscotch layers and it was served to guests with Kapiti ice cream.
My biggest piece of advice to future brides is to get a videographer. I really had to fight Chris on this one because we were already paying so much for a photographer but after watching it he said he is so so pleased that I put my foot down when he said no!
Tamlyn Rose did our video and we were absolutely blown away. She perfectly captured all of the precious moments from the day and pulled it all into the most beautiful video that we will cherish forever. Being able to re-watch and relive our biggest day with all of the tears and laughter again each time is absolutely priceless.
