Just 70 kilometres from Auckland, Castaways Resort is a desirable destination wedding venue you need to know about.
Say ‘I do’ on the beautiful cliff-top ceremony point with stunning panoramic ocean views; celebrate at your reception in the main venue with dedicated bar, kitchen and service team then retreat to the onsite accommodation and wake up to breakfast with your guests at the onsite restaurant.
But there's even more to love: a Balinese-inspired day spa onsite for pre- and post-wedding pampering, and Castaways Resort also offers adventure activities if bridal parties and guests want a bit of fun before the big day.
We're already sold on Castaways, but asked Jo for a few more details we thought couples might want to know:
Why is Castaways so unique?
Our point of difference is that we offer the whole destination wedding getaway experience where you can celebrate your wedding over a couple of days with your guests, and for your guests they can make a holiday out of it. With an onsite day spa, adventure activities, restaurant and the beach a short walk away there is plenty to entertain everyone before and after your special day, or they can just sit back relax and enjoy the ocean breeze and the breathtaking views. Our beautiful location, panoramic ocean views and west coast sunsets attract couples who want a beach/coastal wedding with the benefit of having the ceremony and reception venue in one place and onsite accommodation for their guests. Our stunning variety of different photo locations from the cliffs and black sands of Karioitahi beach to the rural landscape that surrounds the venue is another big draw card. And we also offer a great wet weather venue as a backup (something that definitely needs to be considered when getting married in NZ).
Why can holding a wedding celebration at one space make it more seamless for the couple and guests?
For wedding couples and guests it makes the whole process easier to have your wedding and ceremony in one place as well as staying onsite. There is less stress organising the logistics of your wedding day, no traffic to contend with as you’re all here and you get to sit back relax and make the most of your day instead of having to worry about getting guests home. Plus the celebrations carry on longer as you can get together the next day with all your guests over breakfast.
And what about the planning procedures...
Honestly, planning a wedding is never easy (we can’t lie). But by having everything in the one place it does simplify the process for both us as a wedding venue and for our wedding couples. Our aim is to make the whole day and night seamless so that the ceremony flows effortlessly on to drinks and canapes, a delicious dinner and wedding reception, a great night’s accommodation and then a morning spent enjoying breakfast with your guests and reminiscing about your wedding day.
Tell us about the designated areas within the property for weddings.
For the wedding ceremony we have an absolutely stunning cliff-top ocean front ceremony point. You’ll say ‘I do’ with panoramic ocean views for a back drop. On a rainy day your ceremony will take place in our glass enclosed deck so you can still have those panoramic ocean views behind you.
Wedding receptions are held in our main venue which boasts beautiful ceiling draping, its own dedicated bar, kitchen and event catering team. And a glass enclosed deck to dance the night away on.
How can having the ceremony and reception in the same property save more time on the day?
On your wedding day you want to spend as much time having fun with your guests as you can. By having your ceremony and reception in one place your guests will enjoy drinks and canapes on the lawn whilst you head off for photos in one of our many beautiful locations around the resort, and when you’re done you simply just head back to join in the party. No rushing off in cars, stressing about time… it’s easy and simple and your guests are well looked after in your absence. For guests they can check in to their accommodation, get ready and stroll down to the ceremony where they can relax and enjoy a whole afternoon and evening without the hassle of traveling somewhere different.
What food offerings are popular at the moment?
Our buffet and set menu options continue to be really popular with weddings as they offer a great selection of delicious dishes for their guests to enjoy.
What alcoholic drinks do you serve for weddings?
We are a licensed venue and offer a full service bar for our weddings with a great selection of wines, beers, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks. We do not offer bring-your-own as an option, but if there is something particular you would like us to stock for your special day we can arrange to have this available.
Castaways is a bit off the beaten track. How to couples deal with transportation for guests?
Couples who marry here are wanting the ‘destination’ type wedding where their guests will stay onsite. Being off the beaten track is part of the appeal. We’re close enough to Auckland and the airport to be easy to get to but we feel far enough away to offer people an amazing escape. If wedding guests are not staying onsite we can assist with organising transportation with taxis or coach bus services.
Are there any often-forgotten considerations for couples to keep in mind when choosing one venue for the entire wedding day/evening?
We work very hard to make sure nothing is forgotten during the whole planning process and to make the entire process as seamless as possible. I think people often overlook that we offer so much - as well as a wedding ceremony and reception venue we have the onsite accommodation, a beautiful onsite day spa, restaurant and a great selection of adventure activities - Castaways Resort offers the whole package! Our main priority is to make sure that the wishes of our wedding couples are met and their guests have a great time during their stay.
Couples can honeymoon at Castaways as well?
Yes, couples can head off on a mini-moon after their wedding to one of our stunning Glam Camping sites – a unique blend of nature and luxury where couples can enjoy a secluded night in either a coastal or native bush setting, in hotel style accommodation with a gourmet dinner and breakfast and amazing 'bath under the stars' experience!
