For leading bridal designer Alma Wong, designing a bridal gown is akin to creating a precious memento for a bride’s special day that she will treasure forever.
“As a designer, being able to share that moment is what I love and what I am passionate about,” she says. Having recently opened a new bridal salon space in Auckland’s Mt Eden, the Alma J Bridal 2016 Mix and Match collection showcases this creative sensibility, with Alma and her team celebrating a glamorous and confident look with modern mix and match separates that retain the sleek, elegant signature style for which Alma J is known.
What were your inspirations for this new collection?
A few years ago we created a three-piece wedding gown for one of our clients. Many brides felt this was a great way to provide a fun new twist on a traditional wedding gown. We’ve also met brides over the years who had mixed thoughts about a dress – they loved the top of one dress and the skirt of another, or perhaps loved both the mermaid and ball gown shapes. With these scenarios in mind, we created our Alma Wong 2016 Mix and Match collection.
What did you hope to achieve with this different kind of collection?
The approach is about creating a look that is unique to the bride – this was our vision from the outset. Brides will be able to mix and match from a selection of tops, beautiful lace jackets and light, flowing skirts. Once our brides achieve their desired look, they will also have the option to have the different pieces made as a one-piece gown, so they get the best of both worlds!
The collection also gives brides the ability to change their look throughout the day; perhaps a full ball gown style for the ceremony, followed by a light silk skirt at the reception, then removing a lace jacket to create a party dress for dancing late into the night.
How can Kiwi brides embrace the trend of mix and match separates?
Our Mix and Match collection is perfect for Kiwi brides, as we know they love styling their own weddings. This collection lets them have a hand in creating their dress according to their chosen bridal style, through a mix and match of top, skirt and stunning additional pieces.
Tips for choosing your dream dress:
1. Bring just one or two friends or family members when you go gown shopping – too many opinions cloud your judgment.
2. Stay true to yourself – go for the style that makes you feel amazing and comfortable.
3. Consider the style of your wedding and choose a dress that complements this.
