Weekly Wanderlust: Rarotonga

We’re not sure if it’s the autumn weather taking hold that’s done it, or this weekend’s looming clock change – either way, we’ve been yearning something chronic for an island escape this week.

We’re not sure if it’s the autumn weather taking hold that’s done it, or this weekend’s looming clock change – either way, we’ve been yearning something chronic for an island escape this week. We achieved it - kind of – with this comprehensive guide to a Rarotonga getaway. Happy honeymooning!

Where it is: A four hour flight from Auckland.
Honeymooner type: Those who want to stretch out on the sand, swim – and not do much else.
What to do: Head to Highland Paradise where you’ll see a local village and a cultural show, and take a trip to the Punanga Nui Markets in Avarua – here you’ll find everything from local delicacies (for a third of the price they’re sold for at supermarkets) to crafts and colourful clothing. Zoom over to neighbouring island Aitutaki to explore Aitutaki Lagoon, which brims with a vibrant population of marine life – just a 40 minute flight from Rarotonga.
Somewhere to stay:  Sea Change Rarotonga is an indulgent boutique retreat, comprised of a collection of nine villas nestled on a private white sandy beach. Equipped with a lush spa and highly appointed accommodations (think luxury kitchen fittings and satellite TV), it’s the ultimate way to enjoy the Cook Islands in comfort.
Most Romantic Spot: A beachside dinner at your resort – if there isn’t one on offer, ask the restaurant to pack you a picnic and arrange it yourselves.
When to go: Autumn or Spring.
