Our lucky Win Your Dream Wedding 2015 bride, Marysa, will walk down the aisle wearing a divine creation by Katie Yeung of Hera Couture (whose work can be seen throughout our Spring issue, above). We spoke to Katie to find out what’s behind her covetable designs.
When did you first learn to sew?
When I was eight years old – I learnt from my mother. I’ve been working in the design industry for 15 years, from high street fashion and event wear to wedding gowns, which I branched into five years ago.
What made you want to make this your career?
My crazy love and passion for it. I breathe in it.
What are your favourite fabrics to work with?
Beautiful quality silks and luxurious laces of all kinds from around the globe.
How long does the process of creating a gown take at Hera Couture, from first fitting to finished product?
Depending on the design and whether the gown is from the existing Hera Collection [or bespoke], it’s usually from three and a half to five months.
What should a bride bring with her to her initial consultation?
An open mind – and nude underwear.
How can a bride hoping to lose weight for her day ensure the final result fits perfectly?
A bride can choose to tone up or not to tone up for her day – a wedding dress custom-made at Hera will be tailored to her body shape, not the other way around.
What’s the best thing about being a bridal designer?
I love being involved in a bride's happiest, most exhilarating moments, meeting her family, using the most beautiful fabrics in the world to satisfy my creative urge, then seeing the biggest smiles – and getting real, tight hugs and kisses – at the end of the process.
