Planning on making a trip to a nail, tanning or hair and makeup salon as part of your pre-wedding preening? You’ll want to get the most out of it – Amber McIver from Auckland salon Verdo has all the top tips.
When it comes to nails, maintenance is key
‘Starting a few months ahead of the big day, regular manicures and cuticle oil will get your fingertips in top condition. Manicures every three to four weeks will promote nail growth and keep the nails neat and tidy. As for cuticle oil, applying it twice a day will increase nail strength and flexibility, meaning you’re more likely to bend – rather than break – your nails. Taking these steps will lay the best possible foundation for your big-day manicure itself.’
Opt for quality
‘For brides, I always recommend a Shellac manicure ahead ‘I do’. The polish is a more gel-like formula, so acts as a more durable alternative to regular lacquer. It means a bride is less likely to chip the manicure before her moment in the spotlight!’
If in doubt, go classic
‘Nail art was extremely popular last wedding season – but in the early stages of this season, it seems brides are taking a more conservative approach. You can’t go wrong with a classic French manicure, a chic nude polish or – in some cases – a bright colour that ties in with a key component of you ensemble or wedding theme.’
Getting a fake tan? Make sure you have a practice run
‘When fake tan goes wrong, it can go very wrong. That’s why a trial is absolutely crucial, firstly to ensure your skin doesn’t react to the solution, and secondly to make sure you don’t turn bright orange – a side effect of the wrong shade being applied. Head to the salon for a trial about a month ahead of your wedding, then get the real deal applied two days before the big day. Before you go to the salon, be sure to have exfoliated all over, and don’t wear any moisturiser or other products that could react with or act as a barrier to the tan.’
Do your research
‘Let your wedding style inform your hair and makeup look – Pinterest is a great research tool, and will guarantee you’re armed with pictures of examples you love so your stylist or makeup artist knows exactly the direction to take. Choose your makeup artist carefully, too – ask to see pictures of their past brides, and again, be sure to book a trial to confirm you’re both on the same page.’
