Following our Win Your Dream Wedding bride Lisa’s first visit to the Auckland workroom, we spoke to Kelly about the latest trends in bridesmaid dresses and how to create a complete bridal party look.
What year did you start designing bridesmaid dresses?
I first started working in the fashion industry 15 years ago and branched out to start working on bridesmaid dresses in 2009. I’ve never looked back!
What do you love most about being a bridesmaid dress designer?
My favourite part is getting to know not just the bride but her ‘maids as well. Each dress that leaves my workroom has an exciting journey ahead and I’m always excited to see the beautiful photos post-nuptials!
What must a bridesmaid dress do?
It’s so important that all your ‘maids feel comfortable and confident in the dress they will be wearing. Their dresses should complement the overall look of the wedding party without taking attention away from the bride. Ideally, a bridesmaid dress should be a style that they will treasure and wear again even after the special day.
What are three ‘musts’ when deciding on your bridesmaid attire?
- Opt for a style that is both timeless and flattering.
- Your ‘maids dresses should complement your bridal look – remember that most colours work better with ivory rather than pure white.
- Don’t leave your decision making until the last minute. If you are having the dresses made, this process takes a long time – allow a minimum of three months.
What is one trick for ensuring your bridesmaids look like a collective, but still have individual flair?
I love the idea of working to a theme – be it a colour, a dress style – and giving each ‘maid a slightly different bouquet and hairstyle for individuality.
How are your designs unique from other bridesmaid designers or stores?
I draw my inspiration from the latest fashion, and this shows in the design of all ViCTOR Bridesmaids dresses. Every garment is made to order in our Auckland workroom – we pride ourselves on the personal touches we are able to give each order we receive, even down to writing each bridesmaid’s name on the swing ticket of her dress. As we are a small boutique, we are able to cater to girls of all shapes and sizes.
What is one big trend in bridesmaids dresses at the moment?
What is a hot accessory right now for bridesmaids?
Floral crowns still reign supreme!
Any advice for brides to be?
Do your research. Choose a style and theme that you and your fiancé love, and stick to it. With so many amazing wedding ideas out there it can be overwhelming, so don’t try and include them all. Choose your favourite ideas and do them well.
