Where it is: Florence, Tuscany
Honeymooner type: Lovers of fine food, wine and historic art.
Why we love it: Twinkling sunsets over the River Arno, the best gelato on the planet and passionate backdrop of paintings and frescoes – what’s not to love?
What to do: As the home of Dante, da Vinci, Michelangelo and Boiceli as well as Gucci and Ferragamo, Florence is Tuscany’s must-see capital. After you’ve secured accommodation, visit the Piazza di Santa Croce and the Duomo. There are Renaissance riches everywhere in Florence including the statue of David at the Academia Gallery. Pay a visit to the Uffizi Galery before catching your breath at a café and admiring the stylish passers-by. When the historic charm gets too much, visit the natural hot spas in the peaceful town of Montecatini, about an hour’s drive away. Soak in a healing mud bath at Grocco spas, or indulge in the salty thermal swimming pool at the Torreta or Tamerici resort.
Where to stay: Antique fireplaces? Check. Floor-to-celling windows with Basilica views? Check. Tucked neatly in the centre of Florence, boutique hotel JK Place is a rich juxtaposition of old world charm and modern luxury.
Most romantic spot: Enjoy panoramic views of Florence’s terracotta rooftops as you stroll through manicured avenues in the hilltop Boboli Gardens of Pitti Palace.
When to go: Spring or autumn – April/May or October/November
Don’t forget: Comfortable classic clothing, an international drivers’ licence and a copy of Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes.
