Having taken the helm of bridal boutique Astra Bridal more than a decade ago, Lori has helped hundreds of brides on their mission find the dress of their dreams. Here she shares her top tips for the dress hunt.

‘It’s never too early to start the wedding dress hunt. A good general rule, however, is to start around eight months before the event. The wedding gown will influence many other decisions (bridesmaid attire, embellishments, themes), so deciding on your dress early relieves a lot of planning pressure.
‘Before you hit the bridal boutiques, be clear on your big-day vision. Is it vintage or ultra-modern? Uber-romantic or minimalistic? And what will the weather be like at that time of year? Bring the undergarments you’ll be wearing and photos of your favourite styles, but most importantly, bring an open mind! Your gown consultant or dress designer has a good idea of which styles suit certain body types, thereby eliminating a large amount of trial and error (and potential frustration!) on your part. One or two trusted confidantes are all you need – too many opinions can make the process overwhelming and won’t help your stress levels.
‘Most importantly, have a clear idea of your assets and play to your strengths accordingly. Make sure you adore the dress from every angle – during the ceremony, most guests will have a clear view of the back and side instead of the front.’
